It’s not easy to write a New Year’s message as I am well aware that seasonally familiar words like “resolutions” and “goals” can quickly start sounding like those of Charlie Brown’s teacher: “wah wha wha” in our ears. For this reason I will keep my message short, hopefully sweet, and to the point.

Is it Merry Christmas? Or Happy Holidays? Or Best Wishes for the Season? The world is playing Whack-a-Mole with Christianity. Whenever a Christian principle or teaching pops up, the world attempts to legislate it out of existence. It has come to the point, that for many of us, we feel as if we are offending someone by wishing them a Merry Christmas.

The season is upon us now and, as is our custom around this time of year, Christmas music floats like snowflakes around the house. Like old friends visiting for the holidays we welcome Ella and her red-nosed reindeer, Nat singing by an open fire, and of course good old Bing reminiscing about white Christmas’ he used to know.
This year I managed to get my hands on a Bing Crosby Christmas album my family and I have never heard. While listening to it my wife commented on how old it sounded. I let it slide the first time, but when she repeated this, with emphasis on the old, I said, trying to subdue my snippiness, “So is Christmas hon. Besides, all those people you complain about singing out of key listen to contemporary music.” This got me thinking about a trend I notice concerning the old and the new.

One Sunday, a sister very dear to me runs up to me and tells me about a book she just finished reading that was heart wrenching. Now, my heart gets wrenched quite often as thanks to almost 20 years in CR, my empathy skills are well honed. She emphasized that once she had started reading the book she was virtually unable to put it down, completing it in one weekend.
It is hard to hear this and not have my curiosity piqued so she gratiously loaned me the book to read. She was right. It is a very hard book both to read and to put down.
