On September 24th the New York City Church of Christ sent 18 disciples (6 from Staten Island and 12 from the Bronx) to Lagos, Nigeria to encourage our sister church there. It was an amazing experience from the moment we landed till the time we left 10 days later.  We separated into three groups to best logistically serve the 9 regions of the church.

Some of the highlighting moments were spending time in all of the regions and preaching at the various midweeks, the Congregational Teaching Day on Saturday September 28th, The Independence Worship Sunday, The October 1st Independence Day outreach to the poor, training the staff on Working Effectively With Non-Full Time Staff and last but certainly not least going to visit disciples who lived in some of the remote areas of Lagos.

But what proved to be one of the most exciting times of our trip was the Congregational Teaching Day on Saturday September 28th.  John Beene began the day and did an outstanding job on teaching about “Keeping in Step With The Spirit”, but the entire second half of the day was dedicated to The Chemical Recovery Ministry.

Rose and myself along with two other disciples from our ministry, Troy Figueroa and Pamela Lee did a presentation/workshop titled “Transformed-Overcoming the Power of Addiction” educating the church about the Chemical Recovery Ministry.  We had prayed and hoped for God to bless it but never did we expect the presentation to meet so many needs, you see up to this time there wasn’t an awareness of there being any “C.R.” needs in the church.  But God always knows about our needs before we do and such was the case here.

The presentation was followed by many questions and expressions of the need for a C.R. Ministry there in the Church in Lagos.  So many people expressed either a personal concern or a concern for a family member or someone they knew.  Fred George (one of the Evangelists) had a friend out to the workshop who is studying the Bible and also has C.R. needs.  Because of the obvious need expressed, a subsequent meeting was set up with Chris Ogbannaya (Lead Evangelist) and Omo Iyamu (one of the Elders) along with a brother who used to lead C.R. in the church in South Africa and two additional staff members Abadeen and Waisu along with Troy and myself.  This “brief meeting” turned into a 3 hour training session about how to get a C.R. Ministry up and running in the Lagos Church.  Please keep the Lagos church in your prayers and pray specifically for God to move mightily in the way of helping them to get their C.R. Ministry up and running.
